Review of Quarantine 2: Terminal (2011) by The H — 11 Aug 2013
As much as Quarantine was a shot-for-shot remake of Rec, Quarantine 2 is a drastic departure from the bigger budget Rec 2. Working with a tiny budget, the director has created an admirable addition to the series and zombie movies in general. I actually really appreciated that the director used traditional camera angles instead of the verite style a la Cloverfield.
The script is solid and doesn't waste anyone's time with dumb dialogue, puzzling protagonist choices and excessive gore. The movie itself is somewhat predictable, but it at least injects original content to cliche scenes. Quarantine 2 doesn't make an attempt to be a novelty with humor like Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and Dead Snow, nor does it strive to be a large-scale infection movie like 28 Weeks or Resident Evil. It is what it is: a zombie scareflick done right.
Rec 2 is the superior movie because it really delves deep into what the infection actually is -- an entirely different, and truly terrifying twist on what always seems to be the vaguest element in zombie movies: wth the relative "infection" is. Quarantine 2 gets nowhere near as detailed, but it does offer up genuine frights, even to a hardened horror fanatic like myself.
The Quarantine/Rec series are extremely underrated as a whole. I've seen all four movies, and I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed them all. Stick with Rec 2 if you have to choose, but you won't disappointed with Quarantine 2.
