Review of Pusher (1996) by Ollie W — 28 Jun 2011
Excellent low-budget thriller from the otherwise unremarkable Nicolas Winding Refn, which triumphs partly due to a wonderfully energetic and briskly likeable Kim Bodnia, whose dedicated performance is intense and authentic as the wild and impulsive, drug dealer Frank and partly thanks to Refns superbly realised world.
Every character oozes authenticity and street-wise menace, even Mads Mikkelsen's excellent performance as the dim-witted and weak sidekick, always threatens to boil over completely. Genuinely stylish and innovatively shot, this is a fully immersive experience that is so perfectly performed and so freshly directed that it is elevated from the constraints and cliches of it's now overly-familiar genre.
