Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Mike L — 01 May 2011
Again, PT Anderson; saviour of independent masterpieces, poor actors and wispy stubble is back and doing what no one else does better.
Taking the vehemently unlike-able Adam Sandler and landing him with the perfect role - presumably written with him in mind and perfectly suited to his brand of squeaky voiced, wide eyed idiocy - one that weaves its way through his limited comic abilities and offers him the chance to really explore the nuances of his dramatic acting skills, Anderson carves out for himself a likeable and unpredictable leading man who's excellent work will remain the pinnacle of an otherwise unspectacular career littered with straight-to-DVD penis jokes and shoddily slung together Romantic "Comedies".
Nonetheless, it doesn't really matter how Sandler or the contrarily always reliable Watson, Hoffman and Guzman perform - this is a PT ANDERSON MOVIE!! So just watch it. Its perfect. Superb.
Nobody, absolutely nobody, is working as hard or as consistently at this level currently.
