Review of Prozac Nation (2003) by Abby O — 02 Mar 2008
I'm sure everyone is going to thing it's ridiculous that I like this movie, because it can, at times be difficult to move past dialog like "How can I fight my own inner demons?".
Look: yes, the character is ridiculous and resists help, and sometimes you just want to scream at her to stop being an over-complaining, priviledged lunatic. That's the point. That's what depression is like sometimes. She uses the word "dark" roughly a million times because hey, sometimes depression is a fucking cliche, and that's part of what makes it difficult to talk about. I think Ricci does an excellent job of carrying the movie, and the film realistically portrays how friends, boyfriends and relatives lose their patience with depressives and don't "stick by." Say what you want about it, it did it for me, from the soundtrack to the acting to the direction.
