Review of Proud Mary (2018) by Phenix N — 12 Jan 2018
I was so unreasonably excited for this movie and boy was I let down.
There was actually nothing good about this film. Even the coolest part, the opening credits, feels rushed and sloppy. It had a good foundation but the attention to detail was lacking severely. This just about speaks for the rest of the film as well. The writing was awful throughout. The acting was awful throughout(even Taraji P & Danny Glover, which genuinely surprised me). The story made no sense, there were no clear motivations for anything. The action lacked even the slightest semblance of suspense. It says a lot that the main character gets seriously hurt and the audience feels absolutely nothing. By the time the movie ends, I have an involuntary scowl on my face. Having been disappointed by yet another movie. This is not a blaxpoitation film, nor is it a competent homage to one. This is an embarrassingly bad film that wastes the potential of its premise, main protagonist, main antagonist, and finally its incredible posters. I give it an 'F'. PS Mary isn't referred to as "Proud Mary" even once and she never dons an afro. What a joke.
