Review of Proud Mary (2018) by Mariola F — 24 Mar 2018
Proud Mary is a modern day revamp of the 1970s blacksplotation movie. It is sleek, gaudy, and starring a kick-ass heroine played by the always great Taraji P. Henson. Henson's character Mary is a hitwoman who is caught in the middle of a gang war between rival assassin groups when she takes a young kid under her wing because of some history between the two.
Proud Mary boasts some pretty charming performances from Henson and Jahi Winston who plays Danny, the kid that Mary takes in. These two have a cute sort of chemistry that had the best scenes on the movie.
That being said, this movie is bad. Like, really bad. This movie makes B movies look like Casablanca or Citizen Kane. The dialogue is clunky, the other performances are hard to watch, especially Danny Glover, and most of all the action scenes, which is what was heavily marketed in the trailers, were choppy and uninteresting.
Unfortunately, this movie wasn't even the good kind of bad movie like the Fast and Furious franchise of late, but instead I found myself checking my watch constantly. The only saving grace about this movie is Henson, which along with Neal McDonough, are completely wasted.
I would suggest watching something like Foxy Brown instead.
