Review of Proud Mary (2018) by Dex K — 11 Feb 2018
This film is what happens when white men think they can write for black women. Henson's talents are wasted on this rubbish, if even tapped into to begin with because the material she was given was watered down soda--flat.
Weak at best. Every action was unmotivated. Emotional beats were not met. The story made sense, however was stereotypical. Gang member wants out, boss won't let them go. The heart of it all was missing, despite the score which told us what we should be feeling and when we should be feeling it.
"Proud Mary" is a modern day blaxploitation film and today's audience of color is too smart aka "woke" for the okie-doke. Next time, give us a black, female-lead action flick we deserve.
