Review of Promising Young Woman (2020) by Joeanon — 28 Mar 2021
Watched this with my wife. The cinematography is good, the writing is tight. But the overall story and concepts are weak. I understand what they are trying to cover in this movie: the predatory nature of some men.
But they are doing it in a very ham-fisted, pretentious, unrealistic way, very typical of these third-wave feminist movies that hate men and absolve women of all responsibility of their actions. The men in this movie are all portrayed as dishonest, weak cowards, and the protagonist gets away with mad behaviors that she would never get away with in real life.
There is a scene where she toys with a person’s daughter, and any parent will tell you that if someone did that to their child, they would beat that person within an inch of their life. In this movie, the parent just says “you’re right, I understand your point of view now”.
Ridiculous. My wife hated the movie as well. She said this is a movie that a 14-year old would enjoy.
