Review of Promising Young Woman (2020) by Michaelinperson — 11 Apr 2021
Promising Young Woman not only adds to the Femme Fatale, it also fails it. Cassie, whom we grow to appreciate for in her dominating yet sometimes vulnerable moments, dies predictably for almost nothing.
Was it really worth the lives of her and Nina, two aspirational, intelligent women, to prosecute just one rapist? The accomplices, of which there were multiple; where are they now? The film, despite its try at redeeming its feminist, liberal overtones, leaves this question unprovoked, and honestly, unbothered.
If anything, allowing women so much power only to have them fall perpetuates the criticism around men always needing the last word before one of them, dies, which is rarely ever 'him'.
