Review of Promised Land (2012) by Michael R — 12 Jan 2013
The negative reviews for this beautiful and strangely disturbing film would be inexplicable if not for the stated bias of the critics who don't like it. It's not the film they don't like, it's the message.
I only had a slight problem with the ending, but it doesn't spoil the whole film. Hal Holbrook's performance and the faces of the people in a town deceived are things you will remember long after other films are forgotten.
This is among Van Sant's best works. It's sad that many seem so closed minded that they won't even entertain the thought that the cost of energy is taking a human toll. This is a movie that isn't being judged on it's merit and the vote here is skewed.
..possibly deliberately.
