Review of Promised Land (2012) by Jason H — 25 Dec 2013
Here's my problem with this movie. (Spoilers) All along it is setting up these two guys on different sides of the fracking debate. You can feel sympathetic for both sides, so the movie doesn't feel very preachy.
But then when they flip at the end and have Dustin turn out to be a pawn of Global, it is forcing you to be on the anti-fracking side. And then becomes preachy, trying to hit you over the head with its message.
That being said, most of the movie isn't bad. I liked the first hour, as Steve tries to figure out what this town is like. It definitely can be slow at times, especially in the second half. Despite its problems, it's worth seeing, at least to learn more about what fracking is all about.
Just don't go in expecting an unbiased treatment of the issue.
