Review of Prizzi's Honor (1985) by Bene F — 20 Mar 2010
The movie is over rated, but entertaining and unusual enough for me to just recommend. Nicholson plays his role with a detached air as if he is watching himself from afar and isn't overly concerned with what will happen. His "mafia" accent is not entirely believable. That being said he has the Nicholson power and it kept me alert.
The wedding scene at the beginning of the film is too long. Kathleen Turner goes through the film as if she is at a cocktail party and it works; she is funny and as cynically detached as Nicholson, but she is clearly enjoying herself and Huston (the director) is obviously going for this element in this black comedy.
It has few gut laughs but simmers along with enough of that esoteric and unnamable humor that each black comedy brews for it's own formula. This indescribable fizz is just enough to save the movie.
