Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Juan C — 14 Sep 2010
The Prince of Darkness features a nice setup and atmospheric score. Both these factors are akin to Assault on Precinct 13, as are the possessed homeless people who block the churches exit.
The dream sequences from the future were particularly unsettling, if only for their fragmented nature. They also provide the most interesting part of film as the final revelation suggests a doomed outcome for mankind. I did like the time travel paradoxes and the visuals related to the mirror. The re-interpretation of religion was also a great plot device and in many ways superior to efforts of The Da Vinci Code and even scientology with its alien musings.
Unfortunately the film devolves into an average slasher. For a film that had a lot of interesting ideas it is a crime, more so in the fact that the slasher aspects are so weak.
