Review of Pride (2014) by Chrissy P — 01 Feb 2015
This legitimately inspirational and thoroughly-feel-good movie is about an unusual but extraordinary slice of history involving the solidarity of a gay-and-lesbian activist group and the National Union of Mineworkers during the London strikes of the Thatcher era.
Matthew Warchus directs with the chutzpah of a movie musical (I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't already being optioned for stage adaptation), gravitating effortlessly from crowd-pleasing moments of light-heartedness to surprisingly effective emotional beats.
He is aided completely by his stellar cast, an ensemble of such character and nuance that maintain an element of sincerity even in the film's more formulaic segments.
