Review of Predestination (2013) by Critic M — 06 May 2015
A cool looking film with limitless potential that really shot itself in the foot. "Predestination" completely tricked us with the trailer, I was expecting a time traversing Ethan Hawke stoping horrific crimes throughout the ages. This film however turned out to be a full hour of a butch woman in a bar telling how she became a man. The time travel aspect was barely utilized and was a vehicle for a rather confusing artistic statement at the end.
I can see and admit that this is a well made film that holds the viewers attention, but based on the trailer I was expecting something completely different and much more epic. So many directors are straining to force a Kubric masterpiece, this one just didn't cut it for me. "Predestination" could have been the time travel adventure of the century... but it turned out to be a fizzle bomber think piece that packed little punch.
