Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Cole M — 22 Jan 2011
It's a lot of things: disturbing, heartbreaking, inspiring, and Mo'Nique in her Oscar-winning role as Precious' monstrous mother whom doesn't give a damn about her own daughter with her peremptory manner; her abusive action and words--- she delivers a terrifying performance that could be entered into the Greatest Cinematic Villains. A liar, a deadbeat, devoid of any humanity, and cold-blooded, she allows her own daughter to be raped by her husband without even doing a thing about it. She blames her own daughter for him running out on the family and she destroys her--- literally breaks her down piece by piece, her entire foundation, making her believe she has no use in this world.
Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey are quite surprising in their roles. Mariah, completely unrecognizable without makeup as a social worker and Lenny Kravitz without his signature shades and Rastafarian hat--- they bring a lot to their limited screentime.
It took a long time for me to decide to finally watch this (the subject manner isn't easy to sit through) but it definitely deserved the nominations it got.
