Review of Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009) by Kashan P — 30 Mar 2015
(75%).
Deeply dark, yet still somehow uplifting film centred around someone in perhaps one of the very worst upbringings imaginable. The way this layers on the grief is at times gut-wrenchingly painful meaning this should by rights be almost unbearable to watch, but it isn't, as by the end this is all about how it is possible not to give in even when everything, and I mean everything, is going against you. It would have been easy for this to turn into a TV movie, but thanks to the solid cast and good writing it's way too good for that. And any film that touches upon such upsetting concepts and yet still manages to be actually funny in places and overall enjoyable to watch is pulling off quite a rare trick.
