Review of Pontypool (2009) by Paul C — 15 Jan 2010
Well.... it was unique. I've give it that much.
Parts that pissed me off first. Spoilers, though.:
1) The sudden and unexplained appearance of the comical foreign doctor. Apparently this wasn't strange at all either. He just shows up, explains the plot, *sort of* gets infected-- just enough to add some tension that didn't go anywhere-- then he bounces out through that stupid little window he came in.
2)Stop showing the dead bitch. Over. And over. And over again. You know what I'm talking about.
3) Pretty much the entire last 15 or so minutes of the movie-- from the bitch getting drunk on. She suddenly turns from vital character to giant-stupid-bitch literally before I had time to blink. The main dude has his big "I think I can cure us" madness, but you can clearly heard the military outside. I'm all "Oh, hurray, they're saved." But... they weren't. Main dude starts babbling and shit and instead of being saved, he gets on the radio making a very long-winded and bizarre speech until the pissed off military just bombs the shit out the place to shut him up. Ok he's trying to save the world and all, he's doing very poorly and how he thinks that talking for 30 seconds before he gets blown to shit is going to help more than say. I don't know. Living?
4) I know I've said the whole end of the movie, but the FUCK was with the last bit? Seriously, what the fuck. Even if its supposed to be allegorical or something arty like that, it doesn't make any sense. Am I supposed to think they're in Heaven or something? Jesus fuck all Christ, that part was weird. And to end your movie like that? Why, why, why would you do some shit like that?
That all said, it was a highly interesting film. Unique zombies, and therefore scary again, cleverly directed from the "Less is More" school of thought. A lot of excellent sound work and a dash of enjoyable gore. A bit like REC in the way not just making another zombie film. Pontypool but definitely more unique than REC, but REC is scarier and superior. So you should definitely watch Pontypool, but REC is better, so you should see that too if you haven't.
I'm serious. Go. Go now. Like right now. Now. Now... Now. Now. Like, like, like, like, like, like.
