Review of Poltergeist (2015) by Benjamin H — 31 May 2015
"If it ain't broke don't fix it" this saying is commonly used to say don't try and make something better if it's already great. As much as I love the horror genre, I have to say that this movie did not meet my horror standards. Im not saying I hate the movie but there are a couple of things that I would have modified to make the movie more suspenseful/interesting.
"Poltergeist" is directed by Gil Kenan, credited for the 2006 movie "Monster House" and the 2008 movie "City Of Ember". These movie's box office grossings combined equal nearly $81.5 million. Whereas "Poltergeist" grossed $38.5 million on its own. Now just because it grossed nearly a half of a million dollars doesn't mean that it was necessarily good.
The movie had so much potential with the increase of "movie magic" we have today since the 1982 version of this classic, such as, CGI and 3D modeling. "Poltergeist" had some pretty good graphics and great sound. There were a few things that really bothered me about his movie, like how the light flickering and fading was simply just a fader switch that you could buy at any hardware store. With the $10.7 million budget this movie had, you would think that they would have used more advanced "movie magic" technology.
Let's move on to the scare factor of the movie. There was a lot of jump scares in this movie but for all of these only one or two of them actually made me "jump". Most of them were so predictable you could literally point to the screen when it would "pop" out at you. The things that should have been scary weren't and there were very minor "scary" things that didn't need to be in the movie.
I rate this movie 3/5 for the lack of scare factor and graphics.
