Review of Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) by Digibutter64 — 09 May 2019
Movie adaptations of video games are often criticised. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, however, is an example of such an adaptation done right.
The story is basically this: A guy named Tim Goodman goes to the Pokémon-populated Ryme City after his father is involved in a crash and presumed dead. He later comes across a Pikachu whose speech he can understand, and reluctantly teams up with said Pikachu to look for his father, believing him to actually be alive.
Without going into spoilers, there are a lot of twists throughout the film to keep you guessing. I was a bit apprehensive about the idea of a talking Pikachu at first, but it works and he's pretty funny. The other characters are generally good too, and I appreciate the surprising amount of depth with Tim Goodman. The Pokémon look fantastic too, although they seemed a bit low-resolution sometimes. I also found the climax to be a bit iffy.
On the whole though, a great adaptation and film in general that seems to improve upon the source material. Existing Pokémon fans will get more out of it though.
