Review of Point Blank (1967) by Aidan H — 22 Jun 2007
Gangster films today look weak and feeble compared to this taut, brutal 60's noir. Lee Marvin is the ultimate tough guy out for revenge (even his shoes are mean-looking). He's so hard, I actually felt sorry for a couple of the villains who get in his way and Angie Dickenson never made being terrified so sexy. Its from the same era as Tony Rome, Hustle and those other blunt cop movies but the thing that makes this stand out is the almost existential ambience of the film which lends a kind of European edge to the traditional American gangster film. And its directed by a Brit, too.
Like Michael Madsen says in Reservoir Dogs: "I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan'. After seeing this (and Prime Cut if you can get it), you will be too.
