Review of Pig (2021) by Hesnotdrunk — 27 Sep 2021
Overall, the film capitalizes on subverting expectations of genre and its star power (i.e., Nicholas Cage "going crazy"). And it does this quite well. That's the gist of the high ratings. Would it be as highly acclaimed had it not been for this Cage-driven gimmick? I doubt it.
It is relatively haphazard in hitting its plot points (going from "new environment" to "new environment" in the search) in order to achieve this subversion of genre and Nicholas Cage being Cagey. All in all, it is a good movie (well shot, solid performances - Cage is great, alongside a great approach towards the topic of pretentiousness, the bourgeois, and loss). But I do believe the gimmick of subversion is what led to the "fanatical" reviews.
