Review of Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2005) by Scott M — 02 Jan 2009
A solid, well-observed script is brought to life with a superb performance from the recently-underrated Timothy Spall, who has been reduced to playing goblin-like caricatures in successive Hollywood movies.
He plays Britain's last hangman, an honest, simple, clunk of a working-class man with a thunderous, contradicting moral burden of being England's most efficient executioner. The film focuses on the man, but never forgets to keep the moral balance of the narrative and a skillful evocation of the times.
A strong, superbly acted drama.
