Review of Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2005) by Thomas L — 25 Oct 2010
Between this and Mike Leigh's All or Nothing, Timothy Spall's talent cannot be denied. I had never heard of Albert Pierrepoint before this, which made it all the more fascinating for me. At exactly ninety minutes, this film was the perfect length to document the twenty or so years that Pierrepoint followed in his father's foosteps as England's most efficient hangman.
And the way he finally has to utilize his talent in the end is heartbreaking. And speaking of Mike Leigh films, Eddie Marsan, who stars in Happy Go Lucky, does a fine job here as Albert's bar singing partner.
It's too bad Timothy Spall doesn't get more roles that place him front and center. Most people in the U.S. know him as that cartoonish villian Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter films.
