Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Bhaskar S — 19 Jun 2007
Those expecting a typical mystery/suspense will be disappointed: the entire plot is essentially summed up in the opening paragraph.
The movie is about the sexual repression of 1900s victorian society and the sexual awakening and experimentation of the school-age girls. The conflict between the two forces (one represented by the school and headmistress, the other by the mysterious and dangerous rock) leads to disaster.
Peter Weir is one of the most underrated directors of our time.
