Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Tom J — 27 Jun 2008
Picnic at Hanging Rock has been hailed as an iconic Australian film that helped launch a renaissance in that country's film making. It has also been credited for something more damning: the surge in popularity of Zamfir and pan flute music.
The movie concerns three young women and a school mistress who mysteriously disappear during a Valentine's Day picnic climbing an eerie volcanic rock formation--Hanging Rock. The movie is less interesting in telling a story (we never find out what happens to the girls) then creating metaphors and moods of sexual tension during Victorian times.
Perhaps I have become jaded, but the only mood I really felt was boredom.
