Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Maxwell S — 27 Jul 2012
In a 3 way tie for my favorite film with "Andrei Rublev" and "Magnolia". First of all, this film is probably the most beautiful film I have seen (along with "Days of Heaven", of course).
The camera captures such an effective use of foreground and background, both breathtakingly beautiful most of the time. There was not an inch of this film that wasn't filled with something beautiful to look at.
"Picnic at Hanging Rock" makes a point of what you don't need to make a film disturbing and horrifying. Peter Weir is one of my favorite directors for special reasons. He allows us to see a story that makes the viewers feel like a child again, but manages to be very literate and values the every composition of film.
This film takes his style, but makes things go as deep as they can go. It is his most accomplished film, needless to say. Almost every casual viewer will miss it's masterful delivery, so be aware of that before you watch it.
