Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Alexander N — 21 Jun 2007
Nothing is more frightening (and harder to pull off) than ambiguity. But Peter Weir succeeds here at creating a haunting premise that never quite gets 'solved.' The success here is not simply in clever visuals, but in establishing rules for his somewhat fantastical world, making the eeriness all the more disturbing, as though it were a documentary.
'Donnie Darko' director Richard Kelly clearly took cinematic notes, right down to score aesthetics. Hanging Rock is a character, drawing in the rest of the film, never to be found again.
