Review of Philadelphia (1993) by Brianna A — 23 Jun 2011
A film that still stays in my heart and definitely Tom Hanks's finest performance, Forrest Gump included. His turn as Andrew Beckett, the HIV positive and gay attorney who was wrongly fired was one of the ten best performances of the 1990s.
Philadelphia was also the first film I could remember which openly discussed AIDS, especially since in the early 1990s, it was a topic seldom discussed and not as well known as it is today. Denzel Washington was good but not great as Joe Miller, who represented Beckett in court in a wrongful termination suit.
The courtroom banter between Washington's Miller and Mary Steenburgen's Belinda Conine was one of the best I have seen in cinema. Definitely one of the best acting ensembles and great directing from Jonathan Demme.
