Review of Phenomena (1985) by Bill B — 02 Jan 2012
Great movie. become one of my favorites in horror. it has to completely unrelated plots.
1: a teenage girl (playn quite well by jennifer connelly) who has an unusual bonding to insects. to the point where she can almost control them. a beetle even tries to attract her to it.
And 2: an unseen killer with giant scissors is stalking and killing girls.
But somehow someway argento pulls it off. this was also argentos first film in english (i read that online, is it true? I dunno, i'll believe it). the film has a sorta fairytaleish feel to it. and goblins phenomenal (pun intended) score really adds to it. the kills are good and gruesome. the location is really beautiful. like the first death.
From the beheading death, to donald pleasances chimp exacting bloody revenge, this is a great argento masterpiece that makes very little sense but does at the same time!
For videogame players:
The japanese snes game clock tower: the first fear is loosely based on this.
As was clock tower which was released in usa for playstion which sadly, the precedessor (which also became released for play station) only stayed in japan.
