Review of Phantom of the Opera (1943) by Kenneth S — 21 Sep 2009
From the start of this film, I knew I was going to be in for a long, boring time. It's done in typical early technicolor style with bright, unrealisting lighting, over-the-top performances, and changes to the story which are absurd.
I mean, at first I liked how we meet the Phantom as a character before he becomes the Phantom, but they just happen to have a vat of acid in the theatre office????? What the hell??? Still, though, the film is worth one viewing for Claude Rains's performance, and once he does slink about the theatre killing people, the film becomes kind of interesting.
Too bad that it's almost over at that point...
