Review of Phantasm (1979) by Leia C — 27 Aug 2007
Obviously very low-budget, but with tricks of editing and cinematography combined with general weirdness (flying brain-drilling spheres? stolen corpses turned into murderous dwarves with yellow blood?) to create a certain atmosphere.
With a more realistic depiction of a 13-year-old boy than I've seen in most movies--he curses and sneaks glimpses of topless women, and in a deleted scene, his big brother gets him drunk for his own amusement--plus some far more sensible behavior than most horror protagonists display (going to check out the creepy morgue with loaded weapons in tow? Who would've thought!).
"Angus Scrimm" is possibly the best name for an actor playing a horror villain that I've ever heard.
