Review of Phantasm (1979) by Gareth M — 01 Nov 2007
A cult classic! This is one of the most imaginative horror/sci-fi movies ever created. The Tall Man is an iconic horror movie villain and the spheres he uses to attack break the boundaries for cool weaponary! Whilst there are flaws clear to be seen, director Coscarelli and his actors exert such enthusiasm it's impossible not to love! The movie follows a fun narrative about a bunch of friends uncovering an evil force in their town and the events play out in action packed, scary sequences.
The score is one of the most impressive I've ever heard and instantly recognisable. Coscarelli manages to maintain a creepy, dark atmosphere to a really fun film and there are genuinely scary moments thanks to the increasing tension and moments of suspense orchestrated perfectly.
Not to mention one of the best endings to a horror movie ever!
