Review of Phantasm (1979) by Gordon T — 11 Mar 2010
Just listening to the soundtrack in the car; PHANTASM is AWESOME, CLASSIC HORROR . . .
THE TALL MAN (Angus Scrimm) has got to be the most terrifying character since the old BORIS KARLOFF AS THE MONSTER days.
A buddy of mine and I saw this (on EMBASSY VHS) when we were both 12 years old and I had to walk him home in the dark on a winter night and it seemed like THE TALL MAN was lurking behind every bush and trailing our every step in the shadows of our trek from PADDOCK DRIVE to MALIN ROAD.
A most fascinating and freaked-out movie; and there's the "FLYING-CUISINART" a flying silver-ball that sticks into the victim's head, drills a drill into his brain, and then sucks and splatters all the victim's blood out one the "sterile" white MAUSOLEUM FLOOR.
Hopefully a ROCK-BAND can form that can play IN AN INTERNATIONAL 100 CITY TOUR a bunch of themes from HORROR MOVIES including PHANTASM, PROFONDO ROSSO, HALLOWEEN, TUBULAR BELLS FROM THE EXORCIST and more with HUGE LASER SHOWS and BIG SCREEN CLIPS FROM THE MOVIES.
Maybe somebody can tell ROB ZOMBIE to form a band to play the classic themes from the Horror Movie Soundtracks.
ITS THE SOUNDTRACKS sometimes more-so than the films that are the true stars.
PHANTASM I and II are totally AWESOME!!!
PHANTASM 3 and 4 are "tired" and "worn-out"--even THE TALL MAN seems to be getting weary of terrorizing (chasing kids around) kids in the cemetery after PHANTASM II.
SHAWN SMITH of BLACKEST HEART MEDIA said DAN COSCERELLI'S mother wrote a manuscript for a PHANTASM novelization.
BLACKEST HEART MEDIA went out-of-business and I haven't heard of a forth-coming PHANTASM novelization ever since.
So: Get a hold of ROB ZOMBIE to organize a laser-light horror-theme ROCK concert; I used to JAM-OUT great PROFONDO ROSSO riffs on my keyboard . . .
You can play the PROFONDO ROSSO theme with new and different riffs for (like) an hour and its so awesome playing it and then listening to the playback.
My family can play the guitar-riff on PROFONDO ROSSO: MAD PUPPET BETTER than the SOUNDTRACK itself!!!
ORGANIZE a ROCK CONCERT OF THESE GREAT THEMES (with 100 FOOT SCREENS and LASER SHOWS! thanks. nothing beats live-music.
And grab SHAWN SMITH and ask him about the PHANTASM novelization!
