Review of Persona (1966) by Matthew M — 26 Mar 2008
Film school-level pretensions run amuck in this joyless film. Bergman tries so hard to make a film that is profound and artistic that he fails at both. Pretentious, nonsensical garbage masquerading as art that carries an inherent arrogance.
There is no feeling to the work, it is deliberately crafted as something of a dream, rather than organically growing a dream-like aesthetic.
