Scott is brilliant in the title role of this warrior's story. While audiences today may find the long slow bits of dialogue tedious and the large scale battles lacking it is only because they are ignorant of the scope and beauty possessed by this film.
The opening scene with Patton in front of the giant american flag is pure brilliance and Schaffner, while not perfect in his direction, does a damn good job of taking the often mundane, mixing it with bombacious action and producing a film with almost perfect pacing allowing 3 hours to fly by without you even noticing it.
