Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Rod A — 29 Jul 2008
There's no question that this film is griping in its intensity; it's a cousin to Twelve Angry Men in a way, but much more cynical. I think one of the things that is a turn-of for me is the feeling that this is a star- vehicle for Douglas.
I've recently watched some of his older films like Out of the Past and he's stunning. Although he's a dominating presence in POG, he seems a bit blustery. His French colonel lacks complextity or dimension.
This movie made up its mind from the first frame as to what would happen to all of its characters. There's not too many organic moments here.
