Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Jwasu R — 28 Jan 2012
This is the greatest war film of all-time with 'Saving Private Ryan' in a close second. What Paths of Glory achieves that SPR didn't is that the acting is absolutley superb (especially Douglas, and I dare say it is one of the best of all-time) and it had a much better screenplay. Both had GREAT effects, editing, and cinematograpy, but Paths of Glory gets the edge because the era it was made in was not even close to the technology that Spielberg and Co. had.
I really think that there should be a remake of this just to see if it could be pulled off. Heading the cast would DiCaprio as Dax, Day-Lewis as Paris, Kevin Pollack as Sgt. Boulanger, Seymour Hoffman as Father Dupree, and Scorsese as the director. And my favorited cinematographer Wally Pfister.
Not sure at all how this wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay based off a Previous Medium, Best Art Direction, and Best Makeup.
