Ultimately the best world war one film made to date. Paths of Glory not only displays the horror of trench warfare but shows the deplorable actions of the infantile French Generals. The general lack of concern or welfare of the common soldiers that is synonymous with the war is dramatised perfectly. The premise of three men on trial for cowardice for the failings of an entire company is not only ludicrous but one that you are certain happened in real life.
The total disregard for human life and a view into the human condition are well on display here and no one does it better than Kubrick.
Douglas is fervently passionate in every scene and commands the screen. Truly one of the best and unconventional war films ever put to screen.
