Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Pandy 3 — 17 Dec 2010
A stunning anti-war film directed by Stanley Kubrick that nails you down from beginning to end!!! Its not much of a military-combat film, but focuses more on human corruption and inhumanity that any war can bring out, and where mercy is only for God to give.
Everything is excellent from the captivating script, to the amazing performances (Kirk Douglas, and George Macready) and to the incredible and right on target directing. Specifically the final thirty minutes are highly emotional, dramatic and intense. Pay extremely attention to the dialogue which can be cruel, ironic and really powerful. Just a spoiler free example, on a conversation between Colonel Dax (Douglas) and lieutenant Roget (Wayne Morris), the second one is been picked to do a certain "job", you will notice the above from both verbal and non verbal language. Towards the ending, a breathtaking scene takes place and immediately after there are the most abysmal conversations throughout the film.
Definitely watch this masterpiece, whether you like Kubrick or not, its a must ;).
