Review of Passengers (2016) by Ken C — 09 Mar 2017
This movie has been roundly criticised for it's central premise, and for it's poor handling of a delicate subject. Feminists have been up in arms about it. And yet here is Jennifer Lawrence, a strong woman, a self-described feminist - who signed up for the movie in spite of (more likely because of) it's central theme.
No question, it could have been better executed, but as a sci-fi movie it does what many recent sci-fi blockbusters simply fail to do which is raise some interesting human questions and seek to answer them. I agree, some of the answers are over-simplified for a hollywood audience blunting what could and should have been a much edgier story.
