Review of Paper Towns (2015) by Grace B — 08 Aug 2015
Trying very much to be the next "Fault in Our Stars," this is another John Green book-to-movie that oozes pretentiousness from start to finish. Other than Delevingne the majority of the cast is insufferably irritating, and this may or may not be due to her character having not as much screen time. The story is rather predictable, with no real conflict present as every character's path is easy to determine from the get-go.
The redeeming quality this movie possesses however, is its ending. Rather tahn follow a stereotypical romcom "happily ever after" finish, the film shows how ridiculously unrealistic the hopelessly romantic actions of many a romantic comedy protagonist actually are. The main "love interests" go their separate ways, and are both probably better off for it. An original ending like this raises this film above the sappy endings typical among the genre, and is at least a fresh take on how young love unfolds.
