Review of Palindromes (2005) by Jutamanee J — 20 Apr 2006
Yikes! This is a wierd wierd wierd one. I applaud people's efforts to make art that puts things we take forgranted into different angles so that we are forced to consider it again more deeply...but it is not always a pleasant experience.
There is some very funny satire involving a music video being made by a group of disabled Christian kids in the middle of the film. Solondz is often accused of hating people in all of his films by the way he unsetimentally sort of smears the creepy and pathetic aspects of human nature in our faces.
He was also accused of "exploiting" a handicapped character in his highyly controversial(on many fronts) last film. His response to that was to fill the screen with handicapped characters in this film while making some of the most biting social satire I have recently seen toward targets such as.
..well..Christian "POP" culture and the entertainment industry in general...for starters. And then there is all this creepy stuff involving pedophilia that punishes you but does push the boundaries of perception about the matter.
...don't ask me to explain how. Uh..thats all I guess.
