Review of Palindromes (2005) by Monica D — 27 Sep 2010
Most people enjoying watching movies in which the main character undergoes a positive major life change - that would take most people a lifetime to accomplish - in two hours or less. We are blindly uplifted into thinking that we, too, can become completely different people if we set our mind to it or if we just find the right white woman to encourage us to start writing poetry.
Palindromes, on the other hand, doesn't feed us this line of bullshit. In fact, the main character goes on a serious personal journey only to wind up in the same position in which she started. It's an interesting take on the fuzzy notion of change and whether or not change is ever truly possible.
The film also handles some controversial issues, such as teen sex, abortion, and religion, in complicated ways, forcing us to examine our beliefs and the problematic nature of believing fullly and totally in any one side of an issue.
The acting was a bit weird and stilted for me in some parts, but overall, it was a good film.
