Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Omar L — 26 Mar 2018
"Uprising" is reminiscent of the "Expendables" franchise: an excuse for sensory pleasure with little effort given to story or character. In this case, that is not a bad thing, as the spectacle of giant mecha fighting kaiju is breathtaking at times.
The Jaegers are treated as the legendary toys fans aspire to collect, and the sense of wonder and fun is helped with the young, unserious cast. What's missing is Ramin Djiwadi's repetitive theme from the original Pacific Rim (which makes only a couple of appearances) and Del Toro's trademark omnipresent onscreen viscera.
