Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Gregory E — 10 Oct 2018
No matter how hard it tries, this movie inevitably has the phrase "INFERIOR SEQUEL" tattooed on its forehead. There is no Guillermo Del Toro, there is no Charlie Hunnam, there is no strategic chromatic visual language. There is not Ramin Djawadi's music or Guillermo Navarro's cinematography.
Among the few positive new things, is the overwhelming charisma of John Boyega, which makes us forget for a moment that his character is a magically-appeared son of Pentecost. Boyega is one of those actors who doesn't have an impressive range, but whose characters can easily differentiate one from the other.
Unlike the four wonderful Jaegers of the original film, the new Jaegers don't have much personality. There is no greater aesthetic-emotional connection with their pilots. I don't even remember their names. There is also a small Jaeger-mascot-comic relief called Scrapper that is reason enough to hate the movie.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is a pretty poor sequel, but it's also a very superior and entertaining blockbuster comparing to any Transformers movie. Do with that tip whatever you want. I went to the movies and didn't regret it.
