Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Davrosdaleks1 — 24 Mar 2018
A fun popcorn film. Has sort of an Independence Day feel to it. In fact, I liked this better than the first one. Now, the original did have the stronger dramatic and humanistic backbone to it. However, I felt the narrative to be weak. More time could've been spent on the supporting Jaeger pilots and as much as I like Ron Pearlman, his scenes weren't really necessary. This film may play things more safe, but it does a good job of it.
I kinda liked the new cast better than the old cast. John Boyega steals the show and has all the best lines. Yeah, they do recycle the concepts of the two main characters having chips on their shoulders and tragic backstories, but they still do a good job of it. The overall plot does play it a bit differently. I appreciated the switch to more of a thriller/mystery. (Don't worry you still get your monster fights.).
The films looks great. It is so refreshing for an action movie these days that uses bright colors and lighting. Action scenes are very impressive.
This movie doesn't doesn't reinvent the wheel for you, but it is a pleasant ride.
