Review of Over the Edge (1979) by David F — 30 Jun 2013
The social criticism is laid on a bit thick but it is nice to see a film that takes teenagers and their needs seriously while also portraying the adults in their lives as something more than one dimensional cartoons.
This film has a large cast and uses it to show different responses to the stultifying tedium of suburban planned communities among the youth there, as well as the a variety of adult reactions to juvenile delinquency.
The climactic imprisonment of the adult population of the town by their children in the high school in the wake of a deadly police shooting is prescient, loaded with subtext, and novel for a film about teenagers.
It's like an American 'If'.
