Review of Out of Africa (1985) by Liz — 09 Aug 2010
Ahhh... where to begin? I suppose Meryl Streep is the basis of this movie, so I will begin with her.
To describe Meryl Streep is impossible. Many fantastic actresses say, "Oh it's an honor to even be nominated in a catagory with Meryl Streep." I think this statement is a bit dramatic. Mrs. Streep, though a stunning character actress, generally chooses to act in movies with little to no plot. Though character development, and relationships are a major root of the acting tree, it's not the only vital support to the tree. Her performance in Out of Africa is very much the same as her other roles; she develops a beautiful character, makes strong choices, and becomes one with the character.
Sadly, I don't have as many great things to say about the movie. The plot was too much the memoirs of a boring life. It was of a love-less marriage, a love who was never there, and a job. Though it was written well, and directed with a very pleasing eye for visual and african beauty, the overall product wasn't so pleasing.
Robert Redford was good, but with the very stiff plot line, he didn't do much. So... he was good, but it wasn't his fault he couldn't be spectacular.
Overall, if you like Meryl Streep, or beautiful landscapes this is a spot on movie for you. If you like action, and plot plot plot, this isn't for you. If you don't really care much for any of the above, it could be a good movie, or it could not be. Just go for it if you're curious.
