Review of Out in the Dark (2012) by Kai H — 13 Jul 2014
'Dark' puts the spotlight on a new kind of Romeo & Romeo story in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and should be commended for portraying the struggles of the expatriate men trapped in this geopolitical rift.
However, the film simply lacks the depth and focus needed for a memorable romantic drama. Nicholas Jacob's shortcomings as an actor are also painfully apparent when put against the more subtly expressive Michael Aloni, and their on-screen chemistry suffers as a result.
The film's attempt at a political thriller subplot is also rather banal, but the movie still amounts to a capable exploration of caution-to-the-wind romantic optimism.
